New for 2012: A Different Cuisine Theme Every Month!

Each month in the coming year, Chef Light and his talented staff will present an ever-changing menu which will reflect a different type of food and/or region of the world.  Our daily specials will contain at least one hot item reflecting the month’s theme, the nightly dining room menu will feature several items inspired by it and the Thursday night specials will be geared to highlight the month’s featured cuisine.  To stay apprised of the most current menu, visit our website, www.theshenandoahclub.com

We kick off this new dining program with everybody’s favorite...

January is COMFORT FOOD MONTH!
Winter can be a blistering cold time here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  This month, come visit our Main Dining Room to escape those cold winter blues.  It’s Comfort Food Month and with that comes the kinds of food you remember from days gone by.  With menu items ranging from southern fried chicken to homestyle meatloaf with  gravy, this is the food that will take you home again.

February is THE CUISINE OF FRANCE
February is traditionally the month for lovers so where better to focus our culinary efforts than on the Land of Amour?  The cuisine of France will be spotlighted for 29 glorious days, but you’ll especially want to join us as we celebrate the most romantic night of the year on Tuesday the 14th and the dining room is transformed into the City of Lights for a grand Night in Paris Valentine’s Day Dinner.

Coming in March...THE FOOD OF THE BRITISH ISLES

Please Note New Club Dress Policy

DRESS CODE FOR THE CLUBHOUSE  Unless otherwise noted, proper attire for throughout the Clubhouse is "Club Casual/Jacket Optional" at all times and includes slacks and collared shirts, turtlenecks, mock turtlenecks, dress shirts with Henley collars and golf shirts for all males 13 years of age and older.  Appropriate equivalent attire is expected of women.

Not permitted are short or long-sleeved cotton tee shirts and tank tops unless covered by a sweater, jacket or sport coat.  Except when specifically authorized for a special function, tee shirts and tank tops without a cover, blue jeans, denims, shorts, capes, hats, sandals and tennis and fitness clothing (except golf shirts) are not appropriate attire.  Shirttails must be tucked in.

FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT:

Dear Member,

You may have noticed that American dress codes have become more casual over the past several years, even in the finest and most exclusive clubs and restaurants. Roanoke and the Shenandoah Club are no exception. For example, our Main Dining Room has operated at 10% – 20% of capacity at lunch and dinner while our small casual dining room is often over-flowing. Clearly, our members and guests are part of this overall trend as indicated by their dining room preference.

In order to better understand the Club’s current financial situation, your Board of Directors commissioned a comprehensive study of the state of city clubs in America. Our manager, Beverly Schlegel, CCM and her staff compiled a 32-page detailed report comparing the financial and operational practices and dining trends of city clubs sorted by membership size (600-899), tax status (not-for-profit), revenue size (under $3m) and location (Southern states). After a careful review the Board voted to enact the following changes to our operations effective December 6, 2010—changes that many of you have also suggested.

1. The Bronze Grille—renamed the Bronze Room—will now serve our members and their spouses as a private dining room available at all times of day. The Bronze Room can be reserved for meetings or banquets including breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktail parties and small receptions. This change will increase the Club’s revenue by providing much needed additional meeting space for members.

2. We now welcome all members and their guests to the Main Dining Room and all areas of the clubhouse in Club Casual attire. Casual attire, as stated in the Club’s House Rules, includes slacks and collared shirts, turtlenecks, mock turtlenecks, dress shirts with Henley collars and golf shirts.

3. Jacket and tie for men, while always appropriate and welcome, are no longer required anywhere in the clubhouse except as noted in the newsletter for special events. If you normally dine in the Bronze Grille, please join us in the Main Dining Room where plenty of seating will be available. Now, all members and guests, with or without a jacket, may dine at the Shenandoah Club.

4. Not permitted are short or long sleeved cotton tee shirts and tank tops unless covered by a sweater, jacket, or sport coat. Except when specifically authorized for a special function, tee shirts and tank tops without a cover, blue jeans, denims, shorts, caps, hats, sandals and tennis and fitness clothing (except golf shirts) are not appropriate attire. Shirttails must be tucked in. Appropriate equivalent attire is expected of women.

It is the Board’s hope that these changes will encourage more members to dine at the Club more often with their family and friends. We hope to see you at the Club soon.

Sincerely,

Chick

Chick Pace
President

Just want to thank the Shenandoah Club for catering a wonderful cocktail party in my home for Planned Parenthood. I especially want to thank Sherry for setting up, serving and neatly ending the festivities. The evening was flawless. The food was excellent, the quantities plentiful, the presentation lovely. I loved the small flowers on the serving platters. Beverly and Debbie, thanks for helping me with the food selections and for executing a perfect evening. Thanks Chef Light. Thank you for always being so dependable both inside the club and in my home.

The service and food was excellent as usual. We were very impressed with the level of service considering we were the only diners in the Main Dining Room. I am sure that staying open to serve our dinner was not efficient. As our guests are very old and dear friends and are only in Roanoke for short periods of time, this particular evening was very important. Thank you - and your staff - for making this a very special and memorable evening.

It (Tour of WSLS) was a blast. Kay and I looked at the morning news with a new, more informed view of how it was coming to us. Thanks for all.
